    Pagode-

Som Brasil Pagode Group   The group  performs a mixture of popular contemporary and folk Brazilian music. This group is great for  party-style gatherings  such as  luncheons, brunches, private parties and dinner engagements.

    • In the past this how the samba songs originated, and where the young and old hone their musical skills. The atmosphere is totally casual - often around a table. Musicians play and take turns, listeners join in singing, people dance, often without a break until dawn - forgetting troubles and celebrating life.

    • A Roda de Samba is its more traditional parent where samba (and nothing else) rules supreme. Pagode often includes more commercialized newer songs and the samba arguably is often less sophisticated. More typical pagode songs included are for example songs by Zeca Pagodinho (as the name suggests). For simplicity, let's call our sessions 'Pagode' - it seems to be much in use

    Folklore's do Brazil

(Traditional folkloric dances native to the coastal regions along with rhythms, songs and costumes.) The some of the cultural  history of Brazil, richly told through moving dance theatrics, is brought to life through songs and lavish handmade costumes. This folkloric series recounts the early development of some of the native dances of Brazil, still practiced throughout most of the country today.

    Capoeira   top

Capoeira is game believed to have originated in the Bantu region of Africa and to have been transported to Brazil during the slave trade. In a capoeira game two players use a combination of acrobatic and martial arts movements to maneuver one another into a defenseless position. Capoeira games takes place inside a circular area called a "roda" (or circle in Portuguese) formed by the Capoeira players and onlookers. "Roda" is also the word used to describe the party or event in which several Capoeira games are played striking an opponent directly or deliberately is frowned upon in a capoeira game. Rather, the object of the game is to imply striking movements and to avoid them gracefully.

Games are played to the rhythm of a special kind of music composed specifically for Capoeira. Music sets the tone for games and can inspire players to play fast or slow depending on the tempo and the lyrics of the song. The Main instrument in Capoeira is the “berimbau” (a musical bow with one string) and is accompanied by two pandeiros” (tambourines) and an “agogo” (bells), a "reco reco” (scraper) and an “Atabaque” (drum). During a roda the players of these instruments form a musical ensemble called the “bateria, “and sit at the top of the roda. Capoeira songs follow the call and response tradition of many African musical styles: one player will sing stanzas and the entire group sitting around the roda responds with a chorus. A Brazilian martial art form developed as a means of self defense was used by Angolan slaves originally to resist attempts to enslave them by the traders. One time outlawed in Brasil, today it is performed as a dance combining twisting, turning, high energy acrobatic movementse.

    Maculele

(Pronounced: mah-koo-leh-LEH) is an Afro Brazilian dance where a number of people gather in a circle called a roda with one or more atabaques positioned at the entrance of the circle. Each person brandishes a pair of long sticks, traditionally made from biriba wood from Brazil. The sticks, called grimas, traditionally measure 24 inches long by 1 and 1/8 inch thick. As the Maculelê rhythm plays on the atabaque, the people in the circle begin rhythmically striking the sticks together. The leader sings, and the people in the circle respond by singing the chorus of the songs. When the leader gives the signal to begin playing Maculelê, two people enter the circle, and to the rhythm of the atabaque, they begin striking their own and each other's sticks together. On the first three beats, they strike their own sticks together, making expressive and athletic dance movements, and on each fourth beat, they strike each other's respective right-hand stick together. This makes for a dance that looks like "mock stick combat". (Also, traditionally in Maculelê, the players wear dried grass skirts).

               Presentation of the Orixas      top

Casa Samba will present the Afro-Brazilian religion of Candomblé, spiritual dances, songs and    rhythms  of the Orixas (saints). These Orixas  include:“Ogum, Obaluae, Oxum, Yansa, Xango, Oxumare dance of the Cobra, and Oxala. All are  represented in their traditional dresses and designated colors as well as movements and gestures that are characteristic of each of the Orixas. The dances are accompanied by 4 drummers playing traditional  ceremonial drums. The presentation starts with traditional drumming, followed by a procession of the Orixas. Each Orixas is called out by its distinct rhythm and salutation and performs  its particular dance with songs. The shows concludes with the procession off stage.

Although our performance adheres to most of the traditional aspects of this Yoruba based religion, it is a show not a real ceremony.
