PLEASE
NOTE: Reporting time should be at least 45 minute before
show time. A maximum of 30 minutes between the contacted
performance time and actual starting time will be allowed
before additional performance fees will be assessed.

This folkloric series recounts
the early development of some of the native dances of Brazil, still
practiced throughout most of the country today. Some of the dances are

Curtis gives demonstrations,
workshops and seminars on the samba schools of Brazil, their dances,
their music and their instruments. A fun way to learn about the African
influences of Carnival in Brazil. (Recommended for colleges and all
levels of grades K -12, social clubs, special educational centers. Demonstration
times, length and prices are all negotiable based on individual need.)

Jorge Alabe -

Presents master classes in Samba
and folkloric Brazilian drumming and Orixas dance. Jorge is a renown
master drummer from Brasil, "Alabe" which means that he has obtained
the highest level drummer in the Candomble religion. Workshops, seminars,
and demonstrations are all negotiable based on individual need.
PRESNTATION
OF THE ORIXAS

Jorge
Alabe offers the presentation of the Afro-Brazilian religion of
Candomble, spiritual dances, songs and rhythms of the orixas (saints).
These orixas include:“OGUN,OMOLU,OSHUM,YANSHAN,SHANGO,OXUMARE

dance
of the Cobra, and OXALA"all are represented in their traditional dresses
and designated colors as well as
movements
and gestures that are characteristic of each of the Orixas.

Sambacize
(A dance workout and mental
stress release therapy did to the infectious beat of Samba)
A non-strenuous exercise of
continuous dance movements geared for the novice to the most avid enthusiasts,
who takes their exercise seriously. Learn the most popular dances of
Brazil such as the Samba, Batuque, Jongo, Cafezal, Samba Reggae, or
Condomble an Afro-Brazilian spiritual interpretation form of dance along
with some lesser known ritualistic movements to live or recorded Brazilian
music. This is a great way to tighten up that stomach and get those
hips in shape! (Master, advanced and beginner classes available)

Stiltwalkers -

Fascinatingly skillful, sometimes
over 12 feet tall, dance run, spin and leap their way into your heart
and minds as they perform their craft to the beat of live or recorded
music. Stiltwalker is available to perform alone or with the other listed
events.

WORKSHOPS,
LECTURES OR DEMONSTRATIONS -

We
offer several types of lectures workshops/demonstrations on Samba, Capoeira,
Afro-Brazilian Candomble' music and dance to elementary, middle, high
schools and universities audiences. Other types of workshops include
costume
making,
Brazilian percussion and performance of Afro-Brazilian songs and dances
with live drumming accompaniment. At the university level, a discussion
of the African retention In Brazilian and American dance forms and a
lecture/ demonstration of influence of African drumming in Brazil
and slide presentation of Capoeira Afro-Brazilian Martial Art.

TYPES OF WORKSHOPS OFFERED

Capoeira
Angola
A Brasilian martial art form
developed as a means of self defense was used by Angolan slaves originally
to resist attempts to enslave them by the traders. One time outlawed
in Brasil, today it is performed as a dance combining twisting, turning,
high energy acrobatic movements to the beat of a stringed instrument
called the Berimbau, that keeps the cadence.

Maculele
A dance performed with sticks
developed in the sugarcane fields by slaves to entertain themselves.
The dance was originally performed with machetes.

Camdomble Dancing and
Percussion (Jorge
Alabe) video

The deities or "saints" of the
Afro-Brasilian religion of Candomble. These saints, "EXU, OGUN, OXOSIS,
OMOLU, OSHUM, YEMANJA, YANSHAN AND SHANGO" are all represented in their
traditional dresses and designated colors as well as movements and gestures
that are characteristic of each of the Orixas being presented. The accompanying
music is played to create the desired transcendental mood needed to
perform each dance with real authenticity. It is a mystical, magical
journey into the cultural interior of Brasil--something certainly not
to be missed!

Samba Dance/ Samba Percussion/Sambacize
Experience the tropical sounds
and dances of Brasil from Rio de Janeiro to Salvador, Bahia performing
the dances of major characters of the samba schools; the Porta Bandeira
and Mestre Sala (Flag Bearer and Escort), and Pasisista (dancer). Demonstration
of samba percussion and drums, and pandeiro (tamborine) acrobatics.
The finale culminates in a non-stop samba show with audience participation
for all ages.

INSTRCTORS:
Curtis Pierre
The director and
founder of Casa Samba, recognized by Mayor Sidney Barthelemy in 1993
as the first New Orleans based samba school. Also recognized as one
of the seven pandeiro masters in the United States.
Jorge Bezerra
Also known Jorge "Alabe"
a renowned master drummer/percussionist of the Escola de Samba of Brazil.
His most recent experience has been with the international touring group
Oba Oba, of which he has been a member for the past 15 years. "Oba Oba"
is the internationally renowned Brazilian showcase highlighting Brazil's
rich cultural heritage through music, songs and dance. He was also the
director of the Minas Gerias Samba School in Bela Horizonte, Brazil.
Carolyn Barber-Pierre
Dance instructor
for Casa Samba for over 15 years and has hosted many workshops at all
the major
universities
located in New Orleans and the surrounding areas. She teach's
Samba at Tulane university
as a credieted course now in her 5th year.
